Cataloging software, however, keeps a permanent catalog of information about the images, including thumbnails, metadata and more.īecause cataloging software keeps the extracted information in a database, it has several important advantages over a browser. A browser extracts data from the files on a more or less “real-time” basis and builds its utility around this information. Behind the scenes, however, there is an important difference. Each one can display multiple files, sort according to multiple criteria, and hand files off to other programs. It will have robust tools to create and manipulate metadata to organize and remember information about the images.Īt first, browser and cataloging applications look similar. Cataloging software harvests a thumbnail or preview of the images, as well as the metadata, and keeps it in a database. It will have some organizing tools, but does not have the ability to remember what is in the collection when it’s not connected to the storage media. A browser is a piece of software that can display the contents of a folder or drive for inspection. No more hopeless hours wasted, searching for a lost file, by looking at each CD.There are two fundamental kinds of software you can use to work with large groups of images: browsers and cataloging software. By adding a location (Box 1, Slot 5) to my comments for that disk I am then able to locate it and load the file in seconds. I am able to search ALL my CDs/DVDs for a file name or comment and find which disk it is on. How anyone can have backups, software, music and video CDs / DVDs without an off line catalogue system is beyond me. Although it is not as flash as VirtualCD it does everything I want.

I personally have been using Advanced Disk Catalog for many years. The serious drawback is that this is the only disk catalogue software that only shows you one CD at a time?Ĭome on VisualCD sort that out and you have a winner! Obviously this means that it takes a while to scan the CD and the catalogue files are bigger. The ability to search thumbnails, without having to load the CD, is also brilliant. VisualCD is excellent and I love to be able to look inside ZIP files. The only drawback I can see is that there is no way to add the contents of ZIP or other archives – essential for any software that catalogues my backups!

The sheer speed of CATHY is truly amazing. That is possible because Cathy indexes only the files, their path and information whereas Visual CD indexes the contents of zip filess and media information.
Software disk catalog full#
It takes only a few seconds to index the contents of a full DVD. I previously mentioned that the indexing process was fast.
Software disk catalog portable#
The first disk catalog software was Visual CD.Ĭathy uses a different approach than Visual CD, it's a portable and an ultra-fast at recording information about locations that you add to it, features that Visual CD does not make available.Ĭathy has a size of only 59 Kilobytes unpacked, and the first thing you need to do after starting it up is to switch to the Catalog tab in the interface and add one or multiple locations that you want indexed there.Įvery location you add is listed here with options to remove it again or configure advanced features such as file types or names that you want it to ignore. Cathy is the second that I'm going to write a review about. I'm currently testing disk catalog software programs as you might have guessed already.
